Computer jobs at home – Getting the hardware.

(While working on this I realized I could add more detail to the requirements so I’m writing two articles instead of one. This one is where I cover the hardware. The second article will give you the software options for your work at home business).

Try to remember if any of the business you have visited recently do not use a computer. Most likely, everybody with a need to get work done fast is using a computer, and so you should. You don’t need to get your wallet inside out for a computer. Look for used equipment with the people around you, like your friends and your neighbors. You can even go to the flea market and scan though lots of used pc’s; for sure you’ll find one there for you.

That’s the good thing about computers, that you don’t need the latest technology to start your business. Work for a while, and once you get a few dollars, buy yourself a couple of upgrades. Right now, you need to cover the minimum specifications:

– a low capacity hard drive, maybe 80 gigabytes, to store your programs and your work;
– not too much memory, 512 megabytes to start with;
– a cd/dvd reader combo;
– something to connect to the world, a network card;
– a CRT monitor takes up space but does the job;
– preferably a new mouse and and keyboard.

Expect to pay around 60-80 dollars for the parts I mentioned above. If you care to look further, there is a chance you can pay as little as 30 dollars.

The specs I show you here are old (I’m writing this on Dec. 2009). I’m telling you this because you can go to a computer shop and probably they can assemble a computer for you with this old specs but the parts can be new. This will cost you around $200 dollars, but you would be asking too much, because those parts would be hard to find brand new.

The kind of low cost computer that any shop can assemble for you today with parts right “out of the box” will be between $300 and $400 depending on the components. In this price range you should get at least:
– a hard disk with around 160 gigabytes of space
– you can double your ram
– CD/DVD reader
– the network card for your internet
– a sound card
– LCD monitor
– your mouse and keyboard

If you want to go over $400, then you can get a bigger hard disk, one or two extra gigabytes of RAM, a CD/DVD recorder instead of just a reader, a microphone, speakers and/or headphones. And since you are already in this price range, there are small laptops you can get in case you’re willing to sacrifice some physical comfort to gain in portability. One big advantage of laptops is that you can work almost anywhere and you can bring your talents with you and show them to your potential costumers.

Keep in mind that you’re running a business now, so you have to think about staying inside your budget. While your computer might not be what you want, you need to get started and that’s a big part of the process. It might take you one month, or one year to get the equipment you want, but always think about your business, this is how you are making a living now, no matter how old or ugly your tools look like.

But, get yourself a computer. Come on, you’re almost there!
