Meta tags are HTML tags which are not visible to the visitor but is used to provide information to search engines. Information as for exemple, author of the page, important keywords or page description of the page. Meta tags is between the page and tag and consists of two elements “name” and “content”.
Vissa sökmotorer använder sig nästan inte alls av meta-taggarnas innehåll utan baserad sökresultatet istället på relevanta utdrag ur webbsidans text, andra kan använda sig helt och hållet av meta-taggarna för visningen i sökresultatet. Some search engines dont use meta-tagging the content but rather has the search results based on relevant extracts from the Web page text, others may use only meta tags for display in search results.
It is, however, fewer and fewer search engines that base their search results on meta-tags, but they certainly exist.
The most important meta tags are:
Keywords tag defines your most important keywords for the page.
Description tag provides a description of the page.
Search engines use the tags in different ways, some use them to present the page in the results, others completely ignore the tags, some read the tags and put some emphasis on content, but use them not for the presentation of search results.
Another interesting meta-tag is as follows: <meta NAME=”ROBOTS” content=”follow”>
Instead of follow in content, there are a number of different options, explaining to the search engine what to do:
* Follow = Follow the links on the page
* Nofollow = Do not follow links on the page
* Index = index the page content
* Noindex = Indexing is not part
* None = noindex + nofollow
* All = follow + index
I also take this up “title” tag, which is among the most important tags for SEO. “title” specifies the page’s title, to have a relevant title to the most important keywords is crucial for a successful search engine optimization.
Something that applies to all meta-tags, and even much of the content on the page is not to exaggerate the main keywords. De skall finnas med, och gärna med någon variation på nyckelorden, men inte flera upprepningar av samma ord. They must be included and optimally with any variation of key words, but not many repetitions of the same word.
